Hummingbird Time in Alabama!

It's that time of year for the hummingbirds to make their way back into the area.

Here are some ways you can get ready and enjoy watching the hummingbirds without breaking the bank:

  • Get out your hummingbird feeders and give them a good wash.

  • It's recommended to start with smaller feeders so you're not wasting sugar water. I prefer the ones with an ant mote & keep bees from getting the sugar water.

  • Don't have a small feeder? That's ok, just don't fill it all the way up until the little guys are sucking it dry in no time.

  • Feeders should be washed with soap and water about every 3-5 days, more often in dog days of summer.

    • I keep a spare so I can swap them out, otherwise the hummingbirds come into the garage looking for me. 🤣

  • I start off making about a quart of sugar water at a time. What I don't set out I'll keep refrigerated. Making sure to bring to room temperature before hanging it out.

  • You don't need to spend the money on pre-made hummingbird juice. It's super simple to make. DO NOT ADD ANY FOOD COLORING. The red on your feeder is enough to attract them.

    • 1 cup WHITE SUGAR to 4 cups water

    • Boil for 2 minutes

    • Cool to room temperature, fill feeders and hang out

  • I hang ours from a shepherd's hook, under a pecan tree, in our front yard.

  • Find a safe place to hang your feeders where you won't have to worry about dodging zooming hummingbirds.

We usually put out 2 hummingbird feeders keep the fights down. Let me know how many you usually have out.
